In response to the escalating security crisis gripping the Sahel region, Chad and Burkina Faso have publicly committed to deepening their bilateral defense cooperation. The announcement follows a high-level meeting in Ouagadougou, where senior security officials from both nations outlined concrete steps to strengthen their joint fight against terrorism.

Led by Commissioner Mahamat Ibrahim Man Man of Chad’s Ministry of Public Security and Immigration, a delegation of experts met with Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana. The discussions centered on practical measures to enhance cross-border security collaboration, with a particular focus on counterterrorism strategies.

In a joint statement, the delegation confirmed that this gathering served as a preparatory step ahead of a major joint commission aimed at formalizing a robust security partnership between the two countries. “This meeting is not just an exchange—it is a foundation for a future framework that will shape our shared security future,” stated Mbaï-Naïssem Isaac Chamir, Legal Advisor to Chad’s Minister of Public Security and member of the visiting team.

Chamir emphasized that the initiative reflects both nations’ shared commitment to leveraging their collective experience and historical ties to develop a security strategy grounded in regional realities. “We are not starting from scratch—we are building on a legacy of cooperation that has long defined our relationship,” he added.

The delegation head also expressed satisfaction with the warm reception in Ouagadougou and expressed hope that this momentum would lead to a lasting, mutually beneficial security alliance—one that fully respects the sovereignty and autonomy of each nation. The joint statement concluded that this newfound collaboration would soon take formal shape through upcoming bilateral discussions, particularly within the framework of the planned joint commission.
