The concluding day of the Ligue 1 season was overshadowed by significant disturbances, as two scheduled matches experienced pitch invasions. Notably, the encounter in Nantes against Toulouse was ultimately called off following an intrusion by supporters.
A wave of serious disorder disrupted the final round of Ligue 1 fixtures. On Sunday evening, two of the ten matches on the schedule were thrown into chaos by pitch invasions, occurring in both Nice and Nantes.
In Nice, after the match against Metz, sections of the ultra fan groups breached security barriers. Riot police (CRS) were deployed to push them back. However, the situation escalated to a far more critical level in Nantes.
At the La Beaujoire stadium, the Canaries, already confirmed for relegation to Ligue 2, were unable to complete their fixture against Toulouse. Just 22 minutes into the game, the situation dramatically changed when dozens of Nantes supporters, many with their faces covered, stormed the pitch, compelling the players to retreat to the changing rooms.
“A complete disgrace”
Forty minutes later, the match was officially abandoned. This was particularly heartbreaking for Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodžić, who was managing his final game from the dugout before retiring.
“It’s a complete disgrace. I truly wished I could have approached the supporters to tell them to stop. While I can fully comprehend their frustration, this is simply unacceptable. I poured my heart and soul into this, as a coach and as a person. Regrettably, the harsh reality is devastating,” he expressed.
The Professional Football League has yet to make a public statement but has launched an official investigation into the incidents. FC Nantes now faces severe repercussions. Beyond the potential for a temporary closure of their stands, the club could also be hit with a points deduction for the upcoming Ligue 2 season.
This mirrors a fate that befell Saint-Étienne four years ago, when they were penalized six points even before the start of their championship, also due to similar fan disturbances.
