Malian army drone operations on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least ten civilians, many of them young people, who were engaged in preparations for a traditional collective wedding in Téné, located in the central part of the country.

The strikes targeted the Téné area within the San region. This incident occurs amidst a highly volatile security landscape, following significant coordinated attacks on April 25 and 26 by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebellion, which is predominantly Tuareg.

Across Mali, numerous civilians frequently endure reprisals and abuses at the hands of the army and its Russian allies, or even jihadist groups, often accused of collaborating with opposing factions.

“Ten of our children lost their lives due to gunfire from an unknown source,” a Téné resident, speaking anonymously, revealed.

“What was meant to be a joyous occasion in our village has been transformed into immense sorrow,” the resident lamented.

A security source, who requested anonymity, confirmed the occurrence of the strikes.

“The tragedy unfolded as villagers were organizing the second edition of this traditional collective wedding, a pivotal cultural event for the community,” the source explained.

According to the source, the drone strikes targeted “a procession of several motorcycles.”

“This likely drew the attention of the drones. There were at least nine fatalities,” the source added.

A local elected official also corroborated the death toll, stating, “A wedding was about to take place when the drones killed at least ten civilians. It is truly a period of mourning.”

Mali’s volatile security environment

Mali has been engulfed in an unprecedented security crisis since late April, following a series of armed group attacks against the ruling junta, which appears increasingly vulnerable.

Since these events, military forces have relinquished control over several northern localities, notably the strategic city of Kidal. Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a key figure within the junta, also tragically lost his life.

As of April 30, a comprehensive road blockade has been imposed on various critical routes leading to Bamako.

In recent days, jihadist groups have set fire to multiple transport and commercial vehicles en route to Bamako.

In early May, jihadist assaults, claimed by the JNIM, resulted in dozens of casualties in the central regions of the country.

On April 20, three civil society organizations, including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), formally lodged a complaint before the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights concerning alleged human rights violations committed in Mali, implicating both the Malian armed forces and their Russian allies.
