Gabon joins un executive board after decade-long absence
Gabon secured a significant diplomatic milestone on June 2, 2026, when it was elected as one of 21 vice-presidents of the United Nations General Assembly. This marks the country’s triumphant return to the UN’s governing body after nearly ten years of absence.
Joining five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—Gabon will officially commence its one-year term in September 2026, coinciding with the opening of the 81st UN General Assembly session.
As a representative of the African regional bloc, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will play a pivotal role in shaping the international legislative agenda. Working closely with newly elected President Khalilur Rahman, Gabon will shoulder critical managerial and diplomatic responsibilities, including presiding over key plenary sessions.
Gabon’s responsibilities will extend to leading both ordinary and high-level plenary meetings. The country will also guide the UN’s agenda, ensuring smooth coordination of global priorities. Gabon will participate in the powerful General Committee, tasked with organizing the assembly’s agenda, coordinating crucial votes on international resolutions, and overseeing institutional reforms.
In this role, Gabon will collaborate with fellow member states to champion the African Group’s priorities, particularly in areas like sustainable development, climate action, and UN administrative reforms—a mission aligned with the vision of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
