Gabon secures un role at the un general assembly
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Gabon was elected as vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), joining 21 other newly appointed vice-presidents. For Libreville, this milestone marks a historic comeback to the UNGA’s governing bureau, a distinction the country hadn’t achieved in nearly a decade.
The Gabonese delegation will not stand alone in this endeavor. Alongside five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—Gabon will officially assume its role in September 2026, at the commencement of the 81st session of the UNGA.
Representing the African regional group, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN is set to play a pivotal role. Working closely with the elected session president, Khalilur Rahman, Libreville will contribute to shaping the international legislative agenda and ensuring its smooth execution.
Shaping the heart of UN decision-making
Over the next year, Gabon will shoulder significant managerial and political responsibilities. The Gabonese representative will preside over multiple plenary sessions, including high-level and routine meetings. However, the real powerhouse lies within the influential UN General Committee, where Gabon will directly influence the institution’s direction.
In this capacity, Gabon will help steer critical decisions such as agenda allocation, voting on global resolutions, and managing institutional priorities. A strategic position that amplifies the country’s diplomatic voice on the world stage.
Africa’s priorities take center stage
Beyond procedural duties, Gabon’s vice-presidency offers a platform to champion African causes. By collaborating with fellow member states, Gabon’s diplomatic corps aims to prioritize urgent continental issues. Among these are sustainable development, climate action, and reforms within the UN’s administrative framework.
This diplomatic triumph underscores the vision of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, whose foreign policy has consistently emphasized Gabon’s global engagement.
