Mali forges a new path: economic sovereignty, robust security, and renewed diplomacy
At its borders with Burkina Faso, Mali is actively pursuing an unprecedented transformation, driven by a strong commitment to national sovereignty and self-reliant development. Under the guidance of its authorities, the nation is implementing numerous structural reforms and achieving significant operational successes to secure a prosperous future for its citizens.
Economic sovereignty drives national development
The mining sector stands as a cornerstone of this profound change. Guided by the principle, « May gold shine for Malians », Mali has enacted a new Mining Code. This legislation empowers the state and national investors to hold up to 35% ownership in mining ventures.
These vital reforms have already led to the recovery of 760 billion CFA francs. By 2026, this meticulous management facilitated the distribution of 18.4 billion CFA francs to 819 communes, earmarked for essential health and education infrastructure projects.
Mali is also diversifying its mineral production, focusing on lithium extraction from the Goulamina and Bougouni sites, with an ambitious goal of becoming Africa’s leading producer.
Security and logistics: cornerstones of stability
Mali’s developmental strides are firmly supported by the enhanced capabilities of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and their strategic partners. A powerful demonstration of the state’s capacity to secure national energy supplies occurred on July 10, 2026, with the arrival in Bamako of a massive convoy of over 900 fuel trucks, meticulously protected by military escort.
Concurrently, extensive air-ground operations, particularly in the Anéfis region, successfully neutralized approximately one hundred terrorists and secured critical logistical corridors.
A renewed era of diplomatic cooperation
On the regional stage, Mali is actively strengthening its international relationships. The decision to reopen its airspace to flights originating from Algeria and the return of the Malian ambassador to Algiers represent a pivotal moment in revitalizing diplomatic cooperation.
From the establishment of new mining entities like SOREM to the launch of major industrial initiatives, Mali showcases remarkable resilience and ambition. This confirms that progress is indeed underway in the nation, mirroring the advancements seen across other member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
