Morocco has been selected by random draw to hold the prestigious first seat during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, set to commence in September at UN headquarters in New York.

The appointment was formalized during a plenary session of the General Assembly in New York, where UN Secretary-General António Guterres conducted the random selection process. This tradition ensures equitable representation among member states.

“The Secretary-General has just announced the country that will occupy the first seat in the General Assembly Hall for the next session — it is Morocco,” announced spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing, highlighting the significance of this honor.

The same session also saw the election of Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, as President of the 81st General Assembly. Additionally, member states elected vice-presidential countries, including the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Gabon.

The United Nations General Assembly serves as the world’s most inclusive multilateral platform, comprising all 193 UN member states. Each nation holds equal voting rights and plays a pivotal role in shaping global decisions. Key responsibilities include approving the UN budget, electing non-permanent Security Council members, and nominating the Secretary-General.
