N’Djamena inspects flood control infrastructure ahead of rainy season
The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development, and Housing, Mahamat Assileck Halata, conducted a ground inspection on June 25, 2026, to assess flood control infrastructure in N’Djamena. The visit focused on the Integrated Project for Flood Control and Urban Resilience (PILIER), evaluating the operational readiness of critical water management systems ahead of the rainy season.
The ministerial delegation visited key sites including the Lamadji pumping station in the 10th arrondissement, Chagoua warehouse, N’Djari canal, Toumaï Palace drainage channels, wastewater treatment plant, Pedro construction site, and roadworks. A stop was also made at the 7th arrondissement town hall warehouse to review flood control equipment.
During the inspection, the minister highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to reducing flood-related risks. Following recent heavy rains, an evaluation meeting had been held to assess infrastructure built with support from the World Bank. At the Lamadji pumping station, he condemned the theft of electrical cables essential for the facility’s operation. While the vandalism disrupted one component, the station remains fully functional thanks to four operational pumps.
The minister confirmed that replacement cables, funded by the World Bank, have been ordered and are expected by July 1, 2026. Installation is projected to take just one to two days once delivered. The inspection continued at the Sabangali pumping station and the generator workshop for the 10th arrondissement’s pumping systems before concluding in the Toukra-Mousgoum neighborhood. There, the minister met residents whose homes had been demolished by the 9th arrondissement authorities, assuring them of government plans to rebuild and rehabilitate their properties.
This mission underscores the authorities’ determination to ensure all PILIER project infrastructure is fully operational before the rains intensify. The minister emphasized that, based on field observations, systems are functioning as intended. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to water infrastructure projects, stressing their vital role in safeguarding communities and enhancing long-term living conditions in N’Djamena.
