The diplomatic and economic alliance between Niger and Türkiye reached new heights during an official visit by Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani to Ankara. This marked the first overseas trip by the Nigerien head of state outside Africa since assuming office.

At the conclusion of their discussions in the presidential palace, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdourahamane Tiani formalized several cooperation agreements. These include a higher education protocol for 2026–2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), an accord on managing the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, and a diplomatic cooperation memorandum.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted the shared ambition to expand collaboration across critical sectors such as defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He also announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism to boost business opportunities between Ankara and Niamey.

The Turkish leader reaffirmed his country’s commitment to African nations facing security challenges, particularly in the Sahel. He emphasized enhanced military training and intelligence-sharing initiatives while underscoring that Türkiye’s African policy is built on mutual respect, equal partnership, and shared gains.

Erdogan also highlighted key Nigerien achievements supported by Türkiye, including the Friendship Hospital, irrigation and rural development projects, and educational initiatives led by the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Türkiye.

In response, President Tiani described the relationship as strategically vital for Niger. He credited the deepening ties to Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 2013 visit to Niamey and acknowledged Türkiye’s support in combating armed groups across the Sahel. He stated that this cooperation has significantly bolstered Niger’s security stability and institutional capabilities.
