Olympique lyonnais denied request to postpone opening ligue 1 match

Olympique Lyonnais has formally requested an adjustment to its Ligue 1 calendar, but the French Football League (LFP) has declined the proposal. The club sought to delay its season opener against Toulouse on August 22, citing potential conflicts with UEFA Champions League playoff fixtures.

The Lyon-based team was set to face Toulouse in its first league match of the season. However, with a third-round Champions League qualifier looming—potentially as early as August 4 or 5—the club aimed to ease scheduling pressures by postponing the Ligue 1 fixture. Their reasoning: a potential playoff progression could require two midweek European matches, sandwiching a league game.

This request mirrors earlier appeals from Paris Saint-Germain and Strasbourg during the spring season. Yet, after a Monday evening video conference, the LFP’s governing board firmly rejected Lyon’s plea. The league’s stance remains unwavering: the Ligue 1 schedule must remain intact, especially at the season’s outset, to ensure fairness and consistency across all clubs.

Lyon will now need to navigate both European and domestic commitments without schedule adjustments. If the team qualifies for Champions League playoffs, they will have to fit their Toulouse away match into a congested calendar, balancing league play and European competition.
