Ousmane Sonko’s tour in Mbacké: unveiling the Pastef’s vision for power

During a high-profile visit to the Diourbel region for the Pastef’s 48-hour mobilization event, Ousmane Sonko, the party’s leader, reaffirmed his commitment to financial autonomy and outlined his vision for governance. Addressing crowds in Touba and Sadio, he highlighted the core principles behind his movement while reflecting on the current state leadership’s trajectory.

Financial independence as a cornerstone of the movement

At a rally in Touba, Sonko emphasized that the Pastef’s operations are fueled entirely by the dedication of its members. In response to questions about the party’s fundraising success, particularly the rapid sell-out of membership cards, he underscored the organization’s refusal to rely on public funds.

« Pastef does not draw from state coffers to finance its activities. That is against our principles, » he stated, reinforcing the party’s reputation for transparency and self-sufficiency. With a touch of wit, he shared the news of the overwhelming demand: « By 4 p.m. today, all 13,000 cards dispatched had already been purchased—we had to place an additional order in Dakar. »

He urged militants to remain steadfast, warning against distractions from political opponents. « Do not engage in conflict or respond to provocations. If peace prevails in Senegal, Pastef will claim every victory. No election will slip through its grasp, » he declared.

Revisiting the foundations of the 2024 shift in power

In Sadio, Sonko’s speech took a more analytical tone as he dissected the political realignment that brought Bassirou Diomaye Faye to the presidency in March 2024. He recounted the pivotal role he played in endorsing Faye as the substitute candidate after his own eligibility was challenged, framing it as a historic and strategic decision to uphold legitimacy.

The address also hinted at growing concerns among citizens about a potential drift from the movement’s original commitments. Sonko drew a careful line between the party’s ideals and the actions of the current administration, signaling a subtle but significant divergence in priorities.

2026 and 2029: milestones for Senegal’s political future

Looking ahead, Sonko positioned himself as the guardian of the Pastef’s founding ethos, asserting that 80% of the political struggle had already been achieved under his leadership. He framed the 2026 and 2029 elections as critical junctures to solidify the movement’s vision.

« The work is far from over. These elections are our opportunity to complete the transformation we began, » he told the assembled militants, reaffirming his central role in shaping Senegal’s political landscape.
