Pilgrims return from hadj 2026 with prayers for Burkina Faso
Ouagadougou’s international airport welcomed its first batch of returning pilgrims on June 2, 2026, as 342 faithful touched down after weeks of spiritual devotion in Islam’s holy sites. The historic flight signaled the start of the repatriation phase for Burkina Faso’s Hadj 2026 participants.
Clad in vibrant traditional attire, the pilgrims radiated joy upon arrival, their faces beaming with fulfillment after fulfilling the fifth pillar of Islam. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, whose eyes welled with emotion as she stepped onto Burkinabè soil.
« The journey to Mecca exceeded every expectation. As a first-time pilgrim, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. Everything unfolded perfectly… We prayed fervently for peace and social cohesion to return to Burkina Faso », she shared with reporters.
The government’s representative, Saïdou Sankara, Secretary General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, conveyed official appreciation while emphasizing the smooth conduct of this year’s pilgrimage. No major incidents were reported during the sacred journey, he confirmed.
« Tonight, we bring a message of relief and happiness as we witness our brothers and sisters return safely after completing their pilgrimage. On behalf of the State Minister, we’ve come to welcome them and extend our warmest congratulations, » Sankara stated. « May this spiritual journey strengthen their faith. May all prayers made in Mecca be blessed—for their families, themselves, and our nation. »

The Islamic Associations Federation of Burkina Faso (FAIB), represented by El Hadj Oumarou Zoungrana, praised the meticulous organization of the pilgrimage. He extended heartfelt congratulations to the steering committee for their flawless execution.
The repatriation flights will continue uninterrupted until all Burkinabè pilgrims are safely home, under the watchful supervision of officials and organizers.
