Psg secures 14th ligue 1 title: when will they receive the trophy?

The Paris Saint-Germain have etched their name into the history books once again, clinching their 14th Ligue 1 title in dramatic fashion. With a commanding 2-0 victory over RC Lens on Wednesday, the Parisians sealed the championship before the final whistle of the season.

The celebrations, however, face an unexpected hurdle. Traditionally, the trophy presentation occurs at the Parc des Princes during the club’s final home match. Yet, with the title secured away from home, the scenario has shifted, leaving fans and officials to ponder the timing of the ceremony.

This Sunday’s clash against Paris FC at Jean-Bouin Stadium—just 50 meters from the Parc des Princes—adds another layer of complexity. While the match is technically an “away” fixture, the Paris FC side has planned post-game festivities to celebrate their Ligue 1 survival, potentially conflicting with any PSG trophy presentation.

Ligue 1’s strict protocol for trophy ceremonies

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) oversees all trophy presentations for domestic competitions, adhering to a meticulously crafted protocol. According to article 523-5 of the championship regulations, the LFP is responsible for organizing ceremonies, notifying clubs in advance, and ensuring their participation in the event.

The ruling is unambiguous: clubs are obligated to host the ceremony and comply with the LFP’s guidelines. Refusing such an arrangement is not an option under the current framework. While this ensures consistency, it also leaves little room for flexibility in exceptional circumstances.

Past precedents offer limited guidance

Instances where a champion was crowned after their final home game are rare in recent Ligue 1 history. The last two such cases occurred in 2012 and 2021, when Montpellier and Lille lifted the trophy post-season.

Montpellier’s players were presented with the trophy in front of 30,000 supporters at Place de la Comédie, while Lille opted for a private ceremony at the Domaine de Luchin before parading through the city streets. Both clubs managed to honor their titles despite the logistical challenges.

PSG’s dilemma: timing and logistics

The Parisians now face a conundrum. The LFP could insist on a ceremony at Jean-Bouin, disrupting Paris FC’s planned celebrations. Alternatively, the presentation could be deferred to the Parc des Princes—but the venue’s schedule is packed with preparations for the upcoming UEFA Champions League final on May 30. Balancing these priorities presents a significant challenge.

With no clear-cut solution, the Ligue 1’s governing body must navigate this uncharted territory to ensure the PSG’s 14th title is properly celebrated without overshadowing the season’s climax.
