Sénégal’s world cup 2026 supporters must fund their own travel

World Cup 2026: Senegal won’t cover travel costs for supporters to the U.S.

The Senegalese government has officially declared it will not finance the journey of supporters to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Minister of Sports Khady Diène Gaye confirmed the decision, closing the door on any official mobilization of fans to cheer on the Lions of Teranga during the tournament.

Speaking on Sud FM, Minister Gaye emphasized the government’s stance, stating, “Each nation manages its own affairs. For this edition, we cannot cover supporter travel. The list I submitted included three supporters’ committee leaders, but their visas were denied.”

Government stands firm on no official support

“We will not organize the travel of supporters from Dakar to the United States,” she reiterated, quashing hopes of a state-backed fan presence at the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

With no public funding available, the burden falls on individual fans—particularly those based abroad or with the means to travel independently—to represent Senegal on the global stage.

What this means for Senegalese football fans

  • Self-funded travel: Supporters must arrange and finance their own trips to the U.S. to support the national team.
  • No state delegation: The government will not provide logistical or financial assistance for fan movements.
  • Visa challenges: Previous attempts to include key supporters’ representatives were rejected, complicating organized fan efforts.

The announcement underscores Senegal’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while shifting the responsibility of fan participation to private initiatives. As the 2026 tournament approaches, the Lions’ followers prepare to rally behind their team through personal means, ensuring the vibrant Senegalese spirit travels with them.
