The Director General of the ASP, Seydina Oumar Touré, conveyed a message highlighting Senegal’s stability, the importance of political dialogue, and the crucial need to uphold republican values.

In his statement, Touré underscored that the prevailing political and geostrategic landscape in several neighboring nations serves as a stark reminder of Senegal’s achievements in maintaining stability and national cohesion. He attributed this robust situation to a national consciousness meticulously forged over centuries, transcending ethnic, religious, and political divides.

The ASP Director General further asserted that this remarkable stability is a direct consequence of the profound sacrifices made by previous generations. He reiterated that dialogue has consistently served as a guiding principle within Senegalese society and a foundational pillar for harmonious coexistence.

Senegal’s enduring tradition of dialogue

Within this context, Seydina Oumar Touré contended that elevating dialogue to a central tenet of governance does not signify a departure from tradition but rather represents the continuation of a practice deeply embedded in Senegal’s political history. He emphasized values such as tolerance, forgiveness, mutual acceptance, the capacity for overcoming differences, and constructive debate, presenting them as consistent elements of the nation’s fabric since gaining independence in 1960.

The ASP official also issued a stern warning against divisive rhetoric, intolerance, violence, and narratives of resentment, cautioning that these elements pose a significant threat to social peace and the country’s stability.

Reflecting on various phases of Senegal’s political journey, he recalled that numerous crises and transitions were successfully navigated and resolved through sustained dialogue and concerted consultations.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s call for dialogue

Ultimately, Seydina Oumar Touré commended the call for dialogue initiated by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He characterized this presidential outreach as a clear demonstration of a commitment to govern through active listening, thorough consultation, and the earnest pursuit of consensus. According to Touré, the future trajectory of Senegal must be anchored in a “permanent, inclusive, and sincere” dialogue to safeguard what he affectionately terms the “Senegalese spirit.”
