SOLIBRA’s eco box initiative tackles plastic pollution in Treichville

SOLIBRA has officially unveiled its pioneering ECO BOX project, a significant initiative designed to intensify efforts against plastic pollution and foster a sustainable circular economy within the vibrant commune of Treichville. This launch coincided with World No Plastic Bag Day, observed on July 3, 2026.

The selection of Treichville for this crucial endeavor was strategic. The commune grapples daily with substantial quantities of plastic waste, which frequently obstruct drainage systems and compromise essential sanitation infrastructure. In response to this pressing challenge, ECO BOX aims to transform these discarded materials into valuable resources through a meticulously structured collection and recycling program.

The project thrives on a collaborative partnership involving SOLIBRA, the local Fondation J’Adore de Treichville, and BIRWAST, a specialized enterprise dedicated to plastic waste recycling. This powerful synergy is set to enhance waste management practices, safeguard the urban environment, and generate new economic opportunities for the local community.

To ensure the immediate commencement of operations, essential equipment was provided to the operational teams. This included six robust wheelbarrows, a dedicated collection tricycle, 80 waste bags, a dozen rakes, along with gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms.

Through the ECO BOX initiative, the collaborating partners are committed to achieving several key objectives. These include the progressive elimination of plastic waste from drainage channels to significantly reduce flood risks, the creation of vital employment opportunities for young people in the commune as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of all collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.

A critical component of the project also focuses on public awareness. Collection agents will play a pivotal role in encouraging residents to adopt proper waste sorting habits and to cultivate a strong culture of cleanliness throughout the commune.

The launch ceremony was marked by a symbolic ribbon-cutting, officially inaugurating the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the handover of keys for the inaugural collection tricycle to one of the agents, who will now navigate the streets of Treichville, diligently collecting plastic waste.
