Tchad joins un climate resilience fund after Baku urban forum

The participation of Chad in the World Urban Forum held in Baku, Azerbaijan, has yielded significant dividends. The country has been officially recognized as the 11th eligible nation for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program, which is part of the United Nations Green Climate Fund. Previously, only ten countries had secured this status.

This milestone underscores Chad’s commitment to addressing pressing urban challenges exacerbated by climate change, including devastating floods, mass displacement of communities, and environmental instability in its metropolitan areas.

During the forum, Chad’s delegation, led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata, held a pivotal meeting with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. The discussions centered on critical urban resilience strategies and potential avenues for future collaboration. Following these talks, an initial project was greenlit for funding, with an estimated budget of $900,000 to $1 million. This allocation marks the beginning of what is expected to be a series of larger-scale financial commitments from UN-Habitat in the coming months.
