UDC denounces alleged torture of activist Jacques Bertrand Mang in Cameroon
The Union Démocratique du Cameroun, led by Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya, has voiced strong opposition to the reported mistreatment of a citizen.
The UDC is expressing grave alarm regarding allegations that political activist Jacques Bertrand Mang was subjected to torture and inhumane conditions. Through its president, the party has issued a firm condemnation of these practices, which are strictly forbidden under the Cameroun Constitution. If the reported events are confirmed, they would signify a major violation of fundamental rights and the principles of a state governed by law.
In a formal statement, the political group emphasizes that no form of civic activism or personal dispute can ever justify the employment of violence, cruelty, or degrading treatment. The UDC is calling upon the relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into these claims. The goal is to ensure the physical and moral safety of Jacques Bertrand Mang while guaranteeing that his legal rights are fully respected.
Recognized for his outspoken views on social injustice, governance, and the hardships faced by the people of Cameroun, Jacques Bertrand Mang is once again in the spotlight. The activist allegedly endured abuse within a police station in Douala on June 30, 2026. During a live video streamed on his Facebook page, he was heard requesting his release from officers. He was told he could not leave while in an agitated state and was subsequently blocked from exiting the premises despite his insistence on leaving immediately. Officers reportedly informed him he had to wait for a supervisor to arrive.
This incident follows a history of legal and physical challenges for Jacques Bertrand Mang, who has previously been detained and forcibly placed in a psychiatric facility. His online broadcasts and videos often critique the actions of the police, gendarmerie, customs, and municipal authorities, as well as various political figures and celebrities. Current reports indicate that he has been placed in custody following this latest confrontation.
