Algeria and Niger launch oil exploration at kafra south field

Algeria and Niger kick off oil exploration in Kafra South field

A landmark moment in energy collaboration between Alger and Niamey has begun with the official launch of drilling operations at the Kafra Sud-Est 1 exploratory well. The event, held in northern Niger, underscores a deepening strategic partnership between the two nations.

Kafra basin project: a new chapter in hydrocarbon development

The inauguration ceremony took place at the Kafra oil field, marking the start of exploration activities in a region with significant untapped potential. Representing Algerian leadership, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb joined his Nigerien counterpart, Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine Mahaman, to preside over the milestone event.

The Algerian delegation included key figures from government and the energy sector, such as:

  • Mohamed Arkab, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Hydrocarbons;
  • Lounès Magramane, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • Noureddine Daoudi, CEO of Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach;
  • Saadi Ahmed, Algerian Ambassador to Niger.

The drilling of Kafra Sud-Est 1 represents Sonatrach’s direct investment in expanding Niger’s oil production capacity.

From diplomatic pledges to tangible economic collaboration

This initiative aligns with commitments made by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Nigerien Head of State General Abdourahamane Tiani. Both leaders have emphasized the need to convert political alignment into practical, mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in energy and infrastructure.

Key insight: The launch of Kafra Sud-Est 1 signals a shift from high-level diplomacy to on-the-ground industrial and economic collaboration, focusing on hydrocarbons and renewable energy.

Investment momentum fuels regional growth

This project follows recent milestones, including the inauguration of the Niamey power plant, and stems from decisions made during the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien High Joint Commission in March 2026. By accelerating these priority projects, both nations aim to unlock new avenues for cross-border investment and foster sustainable regional economic growth.
