Barcelona issues 48-hour ultimatum to finalize Rodri’s €80M transfer from Manchester City

Barcelona has established a firm 48-hour window to complete the acquisition of City’s midfield maestro, Rodri. The Catalan club is actively pushing for a conclusive agreement, aiming for the Spanish international to be unveiled during the upcoming Joan Gamper Trophy match.

Negotiations between the two European football powerhouses have reached a critical juncture as they strive to bridge the valuation disparity. Manchester City is reportedly demanding a package nearing €80 million (£69 million) to authorize the midfielder’s departure.

Barcelona’s most recent official offer, which included €60 million plus an additional €10 million in bonuses, was rejected by Manchester City. A subsequent revised proposal, increasing the total to €75 million, also failed to facilitate the transfer, prompting further structured discussions over the weekend.

The primary obstacle in the ongoing discussions remains the precise economic framework of the transfer. City is focused on maximizing the guaranteed portion of the transfer fee, while Barcelona is striving to limit its upfront expenditure.

Both clubs are currently exploring two main compromise formulas to achieve the required valuation. One proposed structure involves €70 million in fixed payments accompanied by reduced bonuses, while another suggests €65 million fixed, supplemented by €15 million in performance-related add-ons.

Crucially, Rodri has already made his strong desire to depart England known, prioritizing a move to Barcelona. With alternative interest from Real Madrid now completely dismissed, the midfielder’s clear stance has instilled significant confidence in the Blaugrana throughout the negotiation process.

Rodri recently returned to England to commence pre-season preparations with Manchester City, having requested a brief delay to resolve his future. He intends to regain competitive rhythm with City, even if his tenure in Manchester appears to be drawing to a close.

Barça views City’s valuation as somewhat elevated, considering the midfielder has only one year remaining on his current contract. Nevertheless, the Catalan management acknowledges that they must meet the English club’s financial demands to secure his signature immediately.

President Joan Laporta is now poised to intervene directly in the final stages of the negotiations. Barcelona’s hierarchy hopes that Laporta’s personal involvement will facilitate the finalization of an agreement over the weekend or, at the very latest, by Monday.

Should Barcelona successfully meet its self-imposed deadline, Rodri is expected to travel to Catalonia shortly after the agreement is concluded. The club anticipates his participation in his first training session on Tuesday, ahead of his anticipated appearance at the Joan Gamper Trophy presentation.

The acquisition of this prominent midfielder will significantly influence Barcelona’s financial planning and the club’s remaining salary cap under La Liga regulations.
