Bénin leads global ocean prediction training initiative with OPERA project
In a bold move to address pressing coastal and marine challenges, Bénin has emerged as a key player in international oceanographic expertise through the OPERA project. This groundbreaking online training initiative, focused on ocean prediction enhancement, recently drew nearly 1,200 participants from across the globe, with local institutions and researchers taking center stage in maritime science.
National leadership in a world-class program
The initiative, spearheaded by the UNESCO Chair / CIPMA at the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC), delivered a seven-week Massive Open Online Course that showcased Bénin‘s academic influence. Among the 1,162 registrants hailing from 111 countries, participants from Bénin ranked highest in representation, highlighting the nation’s strong commitment to environmental and marine education.
Dr. Frédéric Bonou, a researcher and lecturer at UAC, emphasized the practical focus of the training: “This course goes beyond theoretical concepts—it bridges knowledge with real-world applications. Whether you’re a fisherman, coastal manager, or researcher, the tools and insights gained here directly address the challenges you face every day.”
Cutting-edge solutions for coastal and fisheries management
The intensive 21-hour program equipped learners with advanced tools for monitoring and prediction, including satellite observations, Argo floats, and numerical models. The goal? To empower local stakeholders with actionable skills to tackle Bénin‘s most critical maritime issues:
- Coastal erosion prevention: Anticipating wave patterns and tidal dynamics to safeguard the vulnerable shoreline.
- Sustainable fisheries management: Mapping and predicting high-yield fishing zones to ensure long-term viability.
- Maritime safety: Strengthening surveillance of territorial waters and mitigating pollution risks.
A select group of 500 participants received personalized mentorship, culminating in an academic certification jointly awarded by the UNESCO Chair at UAC and the University of Toulouse.
Strategic collaboration with global impact
The initiative’s success stems from a robust partnership between the University of Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS), and Mercator Ocean International, with funding from the European Union under the Arc X / Global Gateway initiative. By integrating local youth and volunteer researchers from UAC into an international network of experts—spanning Bénin, France, the United States, and Spain—Bénin is positioning ocean science as a cornerstone of sustainable development and maritime sovereignty.
