Burundi reaffirms unwavering support for Morocco over Sahara
Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with Burundian counterpart Edouard Bizimana in Rabat.
On Friday, 19 June 2026, Burundi reiterated its “constant and unwavering” support for Morocco’s sovereignty over all its territory. This position was expressed in Rabat following talks between Burundian Foreign Minister Edouard Bizimana and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita during a working visit to the kingdom.
In the joint statement that concluded the meeting, Bujumbura also reaffirmed its backing for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, described as the only credible and realistic solution to resolve this regional dispute. Burundi also expressed support for efforts led by the United Nations to advance negotiations based on this initiative.
Renewed diplomatic support on the Sahara issue
This stance is part of the ongoing African support Rabat has received on the national question. Burundi additionally welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, considering it enshrines the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the basis for a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement. This reminder comes as Morocco continues its diplomatic efforts to broaden and consolidate support for its initiative.
