Celebrating decades of mutual growth and peace

Libreville recently hosted a distinguished gathering at the Chinese embassy, where the 99th anniversary of the founding of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was commemorated. The event underscored not only the historical ties between China and Gabon but also the enduring spirit of collaboration that has defined their partnership for 52 years.

Addressing the assembled diplomats and officials, Zhou Ping, China’s ambassador to Gabon, highlighted the significance of this milestone. He pointed out that 2026 will mark another set of historic milestones for China: the 90th anniversary of the Long March’s triumph and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). These reflections framed the evening’s dialogue on progress and shared aspirations.

“For over a century, the CPC has steered China and its armed forces toward unparalleled achievements in national independence, socioeconomic advancement, and the construction of a distinctly modern socialist state,” he remarked, emphasizing the guiding role of China’s leadership in shaping its global contributions.

Strengthening bonds through global initiatives

In a world marked by instability and conflict, the ambassador reiterated China’s commitment to fostering peace and dialogue. He spotlighted President Xi Jinping’s four global initiatives—development, security, civilization, and international governance—as pillars of China’s vision for a more stable world. These principles, he argued, reflect China’s dedication to collective progress rather than unilateral dominance.

Two recent milestones in military cooperation were singled out as examples of this commitment. First, the 2024 visit of the Peace Ark, China’s hospital ship, which completed its second stop in Gabon, provided critical medical aid to local communities. Second, the recent reception of a Chinese military medical delegation in Libreville reinforced the depth of Sino-Gabonese defense collaboration.

The event also introduced Gabon to its new face of Chinese military diplomacy: Colonel Zhang Song, who recently took up his post as military attaché in Libreville.
