Desperate plight of displaced Kouakourou residents in Mali

“When we arrived in Mopti, we were taken to a school, explains a displaced resident from Kouakourou. They provided us with plenty—rice, tea, sugar, oil, even powdered milk. This aid comes from someone who prefers to remain anonymous, while the local government oversees the distribution.”

“But living in a school is far from ideal,” he laments. Some sleep outside in the courtyard. When it rains, we all cram into the classrooms. It’s unbearable. Food isn’t an issue, but this isn’t a life. There are over 400 of us in the school.”

Kouakourou: A Village Forced Into Exile

“The village of Kouakourou is now completely abandoned,” residents recall. After receiving an ultimatum from JNIM militants, they had no choice but to flee. “Being forced to abandon your home, to leave everything behind—it’s horrifying,” shares another displaced villager. What we want most is to return home. Some left with only the clothes on their backs. The terrorists even took our phones. Worse, this tragedy struck right as we were preparing for the farming season. We’ll have to give up on this year’s harvest—it’s devastating.”

Life in Limbo: Awaiting the Impossible

For the displaced from Kouakourou, survival hinges on temporary shelter and dwindling aid. The school in Mopti, now a makeshift home, offers little comfort beyond basic necessities. With no clear timeline for returning home, frustration and uncertainty grow among the displaced.
