Senate begins second reading of referendum bill in DRC
The president of the Senate, Sama Lukonde, announced on Wednesday, June 10, during a plenary sitting that the National Assembly had forwarded the proposed law setting out the conditions for organising a referendum in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This text, which must now be examined in a second reading by the upper house of Parliament, has been referred to the Political, Administrative and Legal Commission (PAJ) for in-depth study. The commission has three days to submit its report.
At the National Assembly, the bill was introduced by national deputy Paul-Gaspard Ngondankoy, elected from the territory of Yahuma in Tshopo province.
On May 9, the lower house adopted the text by a wide margin. Of the 351 deputies who took part in the vote, 348 voted in favour, two voted against and one abstained.
