Addressing growing speculation about a possible postponement of the 2027 local elections, the leader of the PASTEF party delivered a resolute message: “Let us not forget that three lives were lost to prevent the postponement of the presidential election.”
He questioned the logic behind delaying the first major electoral process since President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration took office. “Why would we consider postponing an election that is part of the regular electoral calendar? The 2024 legislative elections were an exception, called after the dissolution of the National Assembly before its term ended. The 2027 local elections, however, are not.”
Sonko emphasized that the law mandates these elections and that the people must demand their timely organization. “Come January 2027, we must vote. The electoral roll revision should already be underway, but it hasn’t started yet.” He stressed that the sacrifices made to prevent past delays cannot justify new postponement attempts. “We fought hard, and some paid the ultimate price. We will not tolerate maneuvers to push these elections further.”
Concluding with confidence, the PASTEF president asserted that despite challenges, his party remains Senegal’s largest. He pointed to the ongoing voter card sales campaign as a clear indicator of future electoral success. “The results of the card sales already give us a preview of the final outcome. These operations are a reliable barometer of our electoral strength.”
