UNESCO Mali joins launch of 32nd national reforestation campaign
Under the theme “Youth at the Heart of Environmental Citizenship for a Greener, More Resilient Mali”, the 32nd edition strengthens national efforts to restore ecosystems, combat desertification, and preserve natural resources.
Strategic partnership for environmental resilience
On July 26, 2026, a delegation from the UNESCO Mali office, led by its Acting Head and Representative, Mr. Ali-Mohamed Sinane, attended the official launch of the 32nd national reforestation campaign in Bamako. The event, held at the Palais des Pionniers, was presided over by General Abdoulaye Maïga, Prime Minister and Head of Government, representing the President of the Transition.
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders including government officials, national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society organizations, the private sector, and youth and women’s associations. Environmental advocates, sustainable resource managers, and climate action leaders also joined the mobilization to address ecological challenges and climate change impacts.
The campaign, themed “Youth at the Heart of Environmental Citizenship for a Greener, More Resilient Mali”, aligns with Mali’s national priorities to restore degraded lands, fight desertification, and safeguard natural ecosystems. A major focus is placed on youth engagement as critical agents of ecological transition. The initiative aims to plant 21 million trees across the country during the rainy season, contributing to the creation of a more sustainable and climate-resilient Mali.
By participating in this initiative, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to supporting Mali through community sensitization, capacity-building for local actors, and promoting innovative solutions to enhance ecosystem resilience against environmental and climate-related challenges.
