Bénin-Canada relations enter new era with lasting diplomatic structure

The governments of Bénin and Canada have formalized a permanent framework for political and diplomatic dialogue, designed to institutionalize regular consultations between Cotonou and Ottawa. The announcement came via the Bénin Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official X account on August 5, 2026.

Structured cooperation for future collaboration

The agreement was signed by Bénin‘s Deputy Foreign Minister Amori Brunet and Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, as confirmed by Bénin‘s diplomatic communications. According to the official statement, this framework aims to « monitor joint commitments, coordinate upcoming bilateral initiatives, and strengthen collaboration on shared regional and international priorities. »

This initiative builds upon diplomatic ties established in 1962, which have since fostered cooperation in economic development, public health, and education. Annual bilateral trade consistently exceeds CAD 40 million.

New Canadian ambassador accelerates engagement

The formalization of this agreement follows the presentation of the new Canadian ambassador’s credentials on August 3. The ceremony triggered technical working sessions with Bénin‘s government leadership, including the Minister of External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management Hugues Oscar Lokossou and the Minister of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Industry, and Private Investment Promotion Shegun Bakari.

This permanent mechanism represents a renewed governance structure, reinforcing Bénin and Canada‘s shared commitment to advancing their mutual diplomatic and economic interests.
