Bénin transfers health worker management to 77 municipalities

The administrative and financial oversight of contract-based health workers recruited under the 2025 promotion has now shifted directly to Bénin’s 77 municipalities. Key reforms for contract-based health workers

The transition follows a directive signed by the Minister of Decentralization and Local Governance, Rodrigue Chaou, on July 23, 2026. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to reinforcing health service delivery by empowering local authorities to manage personnel and resources more effectively.

Guaranteed regular payments and local healthcare access

Under this new framework, contract-based health workers will receive their salaries no later than the 20th of each month, aligning their payment schedule with that of permanent civil servants. This consistency ensures financial stability for professionals while maintaining service continuity in public health facilities.

The decentralization of health worker management also extends to medical coverage. Municipalities now oversee the health benefits of these agents, enabling faster processing of claims and improved access to medical care.
