President Biya’s Health Sparks Speculation

In recent weeks, persistent rumors have circulated regarding the health and whereabouts of Cameroon’s long-standing leader, President Paul Biya. Addressing these concerns directly, René Emmanuel Sadi, Cameroon’s Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, confirmed that the President is alive and continues to fulfill his duties.

René Emmanuel Sadi emphasized that President Biya has not resigned and is expected to return to Cameroon soon. During a press briefing, he clarified, “The President is in good health and will soon resume his responsibilities. There is no vacancy of power at this time.” However, he did not specify an exact date for Biya’s return.

Medical Intervention Confirmed, but Details Withheld

The government confirmed that President Biya recently underwent a medical procedure while in Switzerland, where he has been for at least 56 days. René Emmanuel Sadi stated, “The President underwent an intervention in Geneva, but he is not hospitalized.” He reassured the public that Cameroon’s institutions are functioning normally, with key administrative officials carrying out their roles without interruption.

The spokesperson reiterated that the question of a power vacuum is unfounded, as the Constitutional Council—the only body authorized to make such a determination—has not issued any statement regarding Biya’s ability to govern.

Constitutional Safeguards Reinforce Stability

Cameroon’s political framework ensures continuity in governance, even in the absence of the President. René Emmanuel Sadi highlighted that the country’s institutions remain fully operational, dispelling concerns about any leadership crisis. “The legal and administrative structures are intact, and there is no cause for alarm,” he asserted.
