Chad commemorated its 66th year of independence on August 11 with a spectacular military parade held at N’Djamena’s Place de la Nation, alongside concurrent ceremonies in major cities nationwide.

National pride on display

The head of state, Mahamat Déby Itno, presided over the event in the capital, joined by two distinguished guests: Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, President of Madagascar’s Refoundation, and General Horta Inta-A, Guinea-Bissau’s Transitional Leader.

The one-hour military showcase highlighted the prowess of Chad’s Defense and Security Forces, boasting over 5,000 active personnel according to official military estimates.

Honoring fallen heroes

Earlier that day, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno paid tribute at N’Djamena’s Monument aux morts, laying a wreath to honor soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Having gained independence from France on August 11, 1960, Chad has since navigated decades of challenges. Following his election in May 2024, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno pledged to strengthen the country’s strategic alliances and reduce dependence on historical partners.
