Gabonese Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has confirmed an upcoming official visit to France on July 20, 2026, marking a significant step in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.

During an announcement, the President outlined that this visit will build upon the ongoing direct dialogue established between Libreville and Paris since the conclusion of the transition period. Key areas of discussion will include economic cooperation, environmental sustainability, Congo Basin forest initiatives, workforce training, and regional security challenges.

a diplomatic milestone in franco-gabonese relations

Since assuming office in August 2023, President Oligui Nguema has made one prior official trip to France, from May 27 to 31, 2024. That visit culminated in a meeting at the Élysée Palace with French President Emmanuel Macron, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration across economic, political, trade, and environmental sectors—with a particular focus on biodiversity conservation and climate action.

The 2024 visit also featured a Franco-Gabonese economic forum in Paris, bringing together nearly 600 business leaders, alongside engagements with the Gabonese diaspora. The upcoming July 2026 visit will represent the second official trip by the Gabonese President to France.

France’s role in Gabon’s transition and future

On the French side, President Emmanuel Macron has made two official visits to Gabon since 2017, most recently between November 23 and 24, 2025. During that trip, Macron was received at Leon Mba International Airport by his Gabonese counterpart, with the stated goals of recognizing the completion of the transition process and supporting the new government under a renewed political framework built on equal partnership.

The November 2025 meeting resulted in multiple initiatives, including training programs for Gabonese security forces, the establishment of an academy for natural resource protection, and French-backed upgrades to the Transgabonais railway.

With the July 2026 visit now confirmed, President Oligui Nguema’s agenda underscores Gabon’s intent to foster a balanced and forward-looking partnership with France. Following the 2024 Paris visit and the 2025 Libreville meeting, the diplomatic calendar between the two countries is accelerating, signaling deeper collaboration ahead.
