Historic Week to Honor Women’s Contributions in Côte d’Ivoire

The first-ever National Week of Celebration for Women Nation-Builders kicked off this Thursday, July 30, at the Yopougon town hall, marking the beginning of a four-day event running from August 1 to 4, 2026. Organized in anticipation of Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th independence anniversary, the initiative shines a spotlight on the pivotal role women have played in the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress.

Themed “66 Years of Ivorian Independence: What Have Women Achieved and What Lies Ahead?”, the week-long program is designed to assess the gains made by women since 1960, address ongoing challenges, and shape future policies to further empower them. Rebecca Yao, President of the NGO Femme Ivoirienne en Politique, emphasized the need for this reflection: “It is essential to pause and evaluate the progress women have made, identify remaining obstacles, and propose actionable solutions.”

Colloquium and Recognition of Pioneers

From August 1 to 3 at the Yopougon town hall, a national colloquium will unfold, featuring an opening panel and sixteen thematic discussions. Key topics include women’s leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth engagement, and women’s rights. An exhibition will showcase the journeys of trailblazing women alongside successful female-led entrepreneurial projects.

The colloquium will culminate in a white paper outlining policy recommendations, which will be submitted to relevant authorities to ensure follow-through. The highlight of the week, however, will be the gala dinner on August 4 at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 women pioneers will be honored for their contributions since 1960.

A Yearly Tradition in the Making

Rebecca Yao announced plans to make this celebration an annual event, stating, “After presenting new proposals each year, we will revisit the resolutions from the previous edition to track progress and adjust strategies accordingly.” The initiative has already garnered support from Mireille Bamba, Yopougon’s deputy, and Adama Bictogo, the deputy-mayor, who have pledged their backing for the cause.

The organizers envision this week as a recurring platform for reflection, dialogue, and recognition of women’s indispensable role in shaping Côte d’Ivoire’s future.
