A cryptocurrency wallet address was prominently displayed alongside a ransom demand of 5 Bitcoins—an amount estimated at roughly $320,000 or 41 million Kenyan shillings. The attackers warned of leaking allegedly sensitive or damaging information about the executive branch if payment was not made by the end of the day. Their message was clear: “This is your third and final warning before we expose everything.”
Government response: containment and controlled messaging
Given the symbolic weight of the attack—targeting the very top of Kenya’s government—Nairobi’s response was swift. Technical teams from State House and the National KE-CIRT/CC (Kenya Computer Incident Response Team Coordination Centre) immediately restricted public access to the portal to contain the breach.
Information, Communications, and Digital Economy Minister William Kabogo Gitau took to social media to deliver a carefully worded statement. He described the incident as a “technical issue,” carefully avoiding the term “hack” in his initial remarks to the press. Security experts point out that targeting a .go.ke domain is no coincidence. Such attacks deliver immediate media impact. Defacing the president’s website not only amplifies the hackers’ credibility but also stokes public anxiety, turning the incident into a powerful lever for ransom demands.
International bodies have also raised concerns. A recent Interpol report highlighted Kenya as one of Africa’s most cyber-threatened nations, with billions of intrusion attempts detected annually by national agencies.
