Malian Army Takes Back Control in Azawad Region

The Malian army has announced it has regained the initiative and control of the situation in all zones targeted by jihadist attacks in the north and centre of the country.

According to a statement released on Sunday, FAMa forces clashed with the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA) at Anifif, 110km south of Kidal, after receiving reinforcements and equipment.

‘Facing this pressure push, Malian army units continued fighting with determination and tenacity throughout the day, using courage and discipline,’ said the FAMa statement.

The army also reaffirmed its ‘full trust in the ability of Malian armed forces to defend national unity and territorial integrity, protect civilians and defeat enemy forces.’

FLA spokesperson Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan had earlier stated that his group controlled the situation at Anfif after renewed clashes.

‘However, he denied reports of FLA leader Mbarek Ag Akli’s death and claimed he remained in command of military operations in northern Mali.
