Niger pushes forward with Nafissatou Idé Sadou’s CEDAW candidacy
Niamey, 10 June 2026 – Niger is strengthening its footprint in international bodies. With this goal in mind, the president of the Advisory Council for Refoundation (CCR), Dr Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey, met on Tuesday, 9 June in Niamey with a delegation advocating the candidacy of Ms Nafissatou Idé Sadou for the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

A strategic coalition to bring civil society expertise to the UN level
At the helm of the NGO Women Action and Development (FAD), Ms Idé Sadou is backed by a committee formed to promote her candidacy on the global stage. During the meeting at the CCR headquarters, committee members updated the president on steps already taken and discussed ways to broaden support for this bid driven by Niger.

What Niger’s UN representation means
The discussions also covered the stakes of such a candidacy for the country. According to the initiative’s promoters, a Nigerien woman joining this UN body would recognise national expertise and give Niger broader visibility in international debates on women’s rights.
For his part, the president of the Advisory Council for Refoundation expressed support for the effort. He urged committee members to keep up their work and stressed the importance of showcasing capable national human resources that can enhance Niger’s profile beyond its borders.
The audience was attended by several CCR bureau officials, including the general rapporteur, Abdou Moustapha, and the secretary of the Justice and Human Rights Commission, Cheikh Hassane Abdoulaye.
More broadly, the mobilisation behind Ms Nafissatou Idé Sadou’s candidacy reflects a desire to increase Niger’s representation in international institutions. If elected, Niger would strengthen its voice within United Nations mechanisms dedicated to gender equality and fighting discrimination against women, while consolidating its diplomatic influence on human rights issues.
