Niamey, Niger, served as the backdrop for a pivotal diplomatic gathering on July 8, where senior officials from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia convened for their second ministerial-level consultations. The meeting brought together foreign affairs representatives from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso alongside Russia’s top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov, to chart a shared course for enhanced cooperation.

The session yielded fresh agreements designed to deepen collaboration across multiple fronts. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Niger’s foreign minister, Abdoulaye Diop from Mali, and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré representing Burkina Faso emphasized the tangible progress already achieved through sustained dialogue between the AES bloc and Moscow. This cooperation spans critical areas such as defense, economic growth, and trade, all anchored in a unified diplomatic vision.

Discussions on regional security highlighted an urgent call to escalate joint military efforts. Ministers underscored the need to reinforce the operational strength of the AES Unified Force, positioning it as a cornerstone for counterterrorism initiatives across the Sahel. They also reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating economic partnerships outlined in the AES Year II Roadmap, aiming to translate diplomatic alignment into tangible benefits for local communities.

Sergei Lavrov reiterated Russia’s unwavering dedication to fostering mutually advantageous relations with the AES. He pledged continued solidarity in supporting both security measures to stabilize the confederation’s territory and long-term development projects aimed at improving living standards for affected populations.

This latest round of talks follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, marking a key milestone in Russia’s recent diplomatic engagements across Africa.
