A fresh political movement for the president

In Dakar, hundreds of supporters gathered for the unveiling of Kiiraay, a name derived from Wolof meaning « protection » or « shield. » Positioned as the party of « Republican Patriots, » this nascent movement is built upon core principles of republicanism, ethical governance, transparency, solidarity, and diligence. The head of state declared his ambition for this new formation to emerge as the nation’s « majority party. » Already, several elected officials and political figures have departed from Pastef to align themselves with the presidential faction.

The rupture now fully confirmed

This announcement concludes months of escalating tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko. Following his ascension to power, President Faye initially appointed Sonko as Prime Minister, only to remove him from the position last May, citing growing political and economic disagreements. Despite his departure from the government, Ousmane Sonko retains his role as President of the National Assembly and continues to lead Pastef, which still commands a substantial majority within Parliament.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye took to social media to announce the founding of Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains, stating that “Kiiraay, in the Wolof language, is what protects.” He emphasized that “This party is born to serve the Republic, the home that shelters all citizens, and it is open to all republicans. The Homeland first! 🇸🇳”

A new political balance emerges

The establishment of Kiiraay ushers in a new phase within Senegal’s political landscape. The new party is expected to convene its inaugural congress following the rainy season. Meanwhile, the developing rivalry between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko is poised to become a central element in the ongoing reconfiguration of Senegalese politics.
