The Dakar Criminal Court has once again postponed its ruling in the high-profile case involving the falsification of Ousmane Sonko’s signature. Khardiata Tandian, who has been held in detention for over a year, remains behind bars as the legal proceedings drag on.

Originally scheduled for July 9, 2026, the court’s decision was deferred for a second time. The presiding judge has now set July 23 as the new date for the verdict. The delay stems from the absence of a key figure in the case—Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy, identified as Tandian’s alleged accomplice. His presence is deemed essential before the court can finalize its judgment.

Legal maneuvers as the trial stalls

In the interim, Tandian’s defense team has seized the opportunity to push for her provisional release. The legal team argued that all procedural documents have already been submitted, eliminating the need for her continued detention. They also emphasized that Tandian, a married mother of a young child, faces mounting social and familial hardships due to her prolonged imprisonment.

Her lawyer further contended that there was no risk of witness tampering or procedural obstruction, as all testimonies had already been recorded. Additionally, they highlighted that Tandian’s year-long detention could potentially cover any sentence she might receive, making further incarceration unjustifiable.

Despite these arguments, the public prosecutor’s office staunchly opposed the request. The prosecution argued that releasing Tandian could disrupt public order and that she did not meet the necessary conditions to guarantee her appearance in court until the case’s conclusion. The court ultimately sided with the prosecutor, rejecting the motion for provisional freedom.

The defense’s plea for compassion fell short, leaving Tandian’s fate unresolved. Her continued detention underscores the unresolved status of the case, which now hinges on the future appearance of Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy.
