Mbombela, South Africa — Police in Mpumalanga Province have arrested a man accused of brutally assaulting his 72-year-old grandmother in Nkomazi Municipality. The incident, which occurred on June 7, 2026, was captured in a widely circulated video that surfaced online.

The attack unfolded at a local tavern in eMagogeni, where the suspect is seen striking the elderly woman repeatedly with fists, feet, and a beer crate. A third individual, present during the assault, can be heard laughing as the victim lies defenseless on the ground, severely injured.

Financial dispute behind the brutal attack

Investigators allege the assault stemmed from a dispute over pension funds. The victim, who depends on her monthly retirement allowance for food and electricity payments, discovered missing funds. Confronting her grandson at the tavern, she demanded answers—only to be met with violence instead.

Following the video’s viral spread, police swiftly located and detained the suspect. He now faces charges of intentional assault and aggravated assault, with a court appearance scheduled for further proceedings in Mpumalanga Province.
