Canada inaugurates its first embassy in Bénin
Canada has officially opened its inaugural embassy in Cotonou, marking a significant milestone in its bilateral relationship with Bénin. The ceremony brought together high-ranking officials from both nations, underscoring a mutual commitment to enhanced cooperation.
Sixty-four years after establishing diplomatic ties with Bénin, Canada has inaugurated its first dedicated embassy in Cotonou. The official opening ceremony, held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, was led by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Anita Anand, who was on a working visit to Bénin. She was joined by her Béninese counterpart, Ms. Corinne Amori Brunet, alongside members of the diplomatic community and Mr. Hugues Oscar Lokossou, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for External Resources Mobilization and Debt Management.
This establishment represents a landmark development, reflecting the enduring friendship between the two nations and their shared ambition to elevate their cooperation to a more dynamic level. The presence of a fully operational embassy in Cotonou is poised to strengthen political dialogue, facilitate more direct oversight of bilateral commitments, and solidify collaboration across strategic sectors.
« Canada is dedicated to collaborating with Bénin, and today we are injecting fresh impetus into this relationship, » affirmed the Honourable Anita Anand, the Canadian Minister. For her part, Béninese Minister Ms. Corinne Amori Brunet highlighted that the embassy’s inauguration signifies a deepening and intensification of the bond between Bénin and Canada. « Our cooperation is expanding, diversifying, and increasingly investing in the economy, innovation, security, and human development – values cherished by both Bénin and Canada, » emphasized Bénin’s chief diplomat.
Earlier on the same Wednesday morning, Ms. Anita Anand, Canada’s top diplomat, and Ms. Corinne Amori Brunet, her Béninese counterpart, formalized a Memorandum of Understanding on political and diplomatic consultations. This document creates a permanent framework for ongoing dialogue, ensuring regular monitoring of bilateral agreements and enhancing coordination on critical regional and international issues.
An extended working session also convened with Mr. Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Industry, and Private Investment Promotion, Mr. Gildas Agonkan, Minister Delegate to the President of the Republic for National Defense, and Mr. Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, charged with External Resources Mobilization and Debt Management.
