Ousmane sonko challenges Senegal’s government on assembly dissolution
The prospect of dissolving Senegal’s National Assembly continues to fuel intense political discourse across the nation. During a Pastef rally held this Saturday in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko articulated his clear stance on such a hypothetical scenario, simultaneously issuing a stark caution to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The Pastef leader asserted that a dissolution of the National Assembly, followed by snap legislative elections, would not serve the interests of the current administration. He confidently predicted a resounding triumph for his political faction in any such electoral contest.
“If he organizes local elections, we will defeat him. If he dissolves the Assembly, that will be even worse for him. And that is, in fact, what we prefer. Because we will beat him hands down,” he declared.
Ousmane Sonko went further, contemplating the possibility that the head of state could face significant political weakening in the aftermath of a potential electoral setback.
“After that, I even fear he might throw in the towel before 2029,” he added.
Sonko urges his supporters to remain calm
Beyond the electoral outlook, the president of Pastef also implored his activists to exercise vigilance and restraint. He called upon them to avoid succumbing to any potential provocations.
Ousmane Sonko suggested that certain actors might be attempting to incite his party’s supporters to react, thereby creating a pretext for punitive measures against Pastef.
“I call on people to be vigilant and calm. Because they are trying to see how to provoke Pastef so that the youth react, in order for them to dissolve the party and withdraw its registration,” he affirmed.
The Pastef leader believes that if his supporters successfully sidestep provocations and maintain their mobilization, the upcoming electoral contests could overwhelmingly favor his camp, which he characterized as a “mere walk in the park.”
